Gold Coast commuters are gearing up for a major transport milestone this weekend as passenger services on the highly anticipated Light Rail Stage 3 officially begin this Sunday.

The 6.7-kilometre southern extension connects Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads, introducing eight new stations to the coastal corridor, including key stops at Mermaid Beach, Miami, and Christine Avenue. The first trams are scheduled to depart from both Burleigh Heads and Broadbeach stations at 6:00 am on Sunday morning.

Connecting the Coast

The $1.55 billion infrastructure project, which broke ground in July 2022, represents a major step forward in the state's long-term transport strategy. While the final cost reflects a significant increase from the initial $709 million estimate, officials stress that the completed link is vital for easing congestion in one of Australia's fastest-growing regions, especially ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg acknowledged the budget challenges, attributing them largely to industrial complexities, but emphasized the priority was getting the job done for Gold Coasters.

"It certainly didn't stick to budget, but my job since coming to government was to get this delivered," Minister Mickelberg said. "We know the Gold Coast needs additional investment in public transport, and this is a really important milestone."

In a win for budget-conscious commuters, the Minister confirmed that the popular 50-cent flat fares will apply across the entire light rail network, making the new service highly affordable for residents and tourists alike.

Relief for Local Traders

While the opening marks a celebratory moment for commuters, it also signals the end of a challenging period for local businesses along the construction route. Ongoing works and delays—with completion originally touted for mid-2025—had heavily impacted trade and foot traffic for several years.

Burleigh MP Hermann Vorster expressed strong relief on behalf of the local community, describing the commencement of services as a long-awaited "light at the end of the tunnel."

"Burleigh locals have endured so much disruption, and they'll be breathing a sigh of relief with services now just around the corner," Mr. Vorster said. "I know thousands of Gold Coasters can't wait to come and support our local clubs and traders."

With the tracks cleared and testing complete, the new extension is set to breathe fresh life into the southern Gold Coast, making it easier than ever to travel between some of the city's most iconic coastal destinations.
