Cairns School Stabbing: Teenager Hospitalized, Second Youth in Custody
A 15-year-old student is in a stable condition following an alleged stabbing at Trinity Bay State High in Cairns. A second teenager has been taken into custody nearby.
A teenage boy has been taken into police custody following an alleged stabbing at a high school in Cairns.
Emergency services were called to Trinity Bay State High in Manunda just before midday following reports that a 15-year-old boy had sustained a wound to his abdomen. The injured youth has been transported to Cairns Hospital, where he is currently in a stable condition.
Suspect Apprehended in Nearby Suburb
According to authorities, a second 15-year-old boy fled the school grounds on foot after the incident. Officers located him approximately 30 minutes later in the neighbouring suburb of Kanimbla. The teenager was taken into custody and is currently assisting police with their enquiries. Investigators have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat and that the two boys were known to each other.
Support Offered to School Community
In a letter sent to parents, executive principal Tony Whybird said he had "arranged for additional support to be available at the school for staff and students".
The Queensland education department confirmed it was aware of a "serious incident that required emergency services" at the Far North Queensland school.
A spokesperson for the department stated, "The school is communicating with impacted students and families, and counselling and support is in place for all students and staff who require it," noting that no further details would be released during the active police investigation.
