A teenager is facing serious charges in court today following an alleged stabbing incident that shocked a Far North Queensland school community yesterday.

Emergency services rushed to Trinity Bay State High School in the inner Cairns suburb of Manunda just before midday on Thursday, following reports of a physical altercation. A 15-year-old boy sustained an abdominal wound during the confrontation.

Police Swiftly Apprehend Suspect

The alleged attacker, also a 15-year-old boy, reportedly fled the school grounds on foot. Queensland Police officers quickly established a perimeter, tracking and arresting the youth in the nearby suburb of Kanimbla shortly after the incident took place.

This morning, police formally charged the teenager with one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm. He was refused bail and is expected to appear in the Cairns Children's Court today. Authorities have indicated that the two youths are known to one another, suggesting this was not a random attack.

Victim Stable, School Community Offered Support

The injured student was transported to Cairns Hospital, where medical staff confirmed he remains in a stable condition.

In the wake of the incident, Trinity Bay State High School Principal Tony Whybird and the Department of Education announced that comprehensive counseling and support networks are being provided to students, staff, and families affected by the distressing event.

Due to the active police investigation, school leadership and education department officials have declined to comment further on the specifics of the incident.
