A sea of flickering candles illuminated Fogarty Park as the Cairns community gathered to grieve, remember, and stand in solidarity with the family of Savannah Spence Paige. The 25-year-old Kewarra Beach resident tragically lost her life in a devastating multi-vehicle collision on the Smithfield Bypass on Wednesday, August 5.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, family, friends, and local residents sat quietly around a central portrait of Savannah, surrounded by glowing candles. The emotional tribute was organized by local resident Shinae West, who felt compelled to create a space where the community could process their collective grief.

A Community Grieving Together

"In honour of her life, and Cairns getting together and grieving together with the family, is really what it's about," Ms. West said. She shared that the tragedy resonated deeply with her, as her own family had suffered a similar devastating loss when her brother was killed in a car accident in 2007. "It could've been avoided, really," she added.

Savannah’s husband, Lachlan Paige, attended the vigil alongside other close family members, visibly moved by the overwhelming show of support from people they had only recently come to know. The couple had not long ago moved to the Cairns northern beaches to begin a new chapter of their lives together.

Local resident Jenna Shingles, who attended the vigil with her family, spoke of how deeply the tragedy had shaken the neighbourhood. "Our daughter is 17, and driving, and she just drove [the Smithfield Bypass] to have lunch with me half an hour beforehand," she said. "It could have been anyone."

Another attendee, Alicia Clark, described the situation as heartbreaking. "The whole situation is so tragic and to think it could have been avoided, it could have been prevented," she said. Leonie Bowen, who attended alongside her husband Mark, echoed these feelings, stating: "Just to let the husband and the family know that the whole Cairns community is supporting them. They're not alone."

Legal Proceedings Underway

The crash occurred on a newly completed section of the Captain Cook Highway. Police allege that the collision was caused by a 36-year-old man driving a utility vehicle that had been stolen from Palm Cove just minutes prior to the impact.

Jake Edward Warn, 36, has been charged with manslaughter and four other offences related to the incident. He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court again in October. Police prosecutors have already flagged that they may seek to upgrade the manslaughter charge to murder as their investigations progress.

A Lasting Legacy

In a statement released by Savannah's family, they expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from the Far North Queensland community, noting they were deeply touched by the vigil. They described Savannah as an extraordinary young woman with an "incredible sense of humour and a kind and caring heart."

"She has left a hole in our hearts that can never be filled," the family statement read.

To assist her husband Lachlan with ongoing expenses during this unimaginably difficult time, an online fundraising campaign was launched. It has already struck a chord with the public, raising more than $60,000 from hundreds of generous donors, serving as a tangible testament to the warmth and generosity of the Cairns community.
