A tight-knit outback town in Queensland's south-west is grieving following the devastating discovery of a young pregnant woman and her partner dead in a suspected murder-suicide.

The bodies of 23-year-old Julia Brunsdon and 45-year-old Michael Waltke were found at a residential property in Charleville in the early hours of Thursday morning. Police have since confirmed that Ms Brunsdon was pregnant at the time of her death.

A Heroic Rescue Amidst Grave Danger

As tragedy unfolded, local officers managed to rescue an 18-month-old girl from the residence. Southern Region Assistant Police Commissioner Matthew Vanderbyl praised the actions of the responding officer, who immediately comforted the toddler.

"That police officer took that child and did what anyone who has young children or knows young children would do, and just held that child close to his chest until she calmed," Assistant Commissioner Vanderbyl said. The toddler was transported to Charleville Hospital and was fortunately found to be physically uninjured.

First responders had initially been called to the home at approximately 6:00 PM on Wednesday following reports of a serious assault. Upon arrival, officers were confronted with an incredibly violent and volatile situation, prompting them to make an emergency declaration.

Assistant Commissioner Vanderbyl explained that officers had to tactically withdraw after threats involving a firearm were made. "I have viewed the footage, and I can tell you that they were in what I would consider was grave danger," he said, noting that specialist negotiators were immediately flown in from Brisbane to assist.

Complex Investigation Commences

Forensic investigators and specialist police have arrived in Charleville to piece together the sequence of events. Officials have warned that the investigation will be highly detailed and lengthy as they examine the history of the couple, their health, and their time spent living in the community.

"We will explore every facet of the involved persons' lives to try and piece together how this could end up in the terrible way it did," Assistant Commissioner Vanderbyl stated, adding that it is still too early to speculate on the exact sequence of events.

A Community in Deep Mourning

The town of Charleville, home to roughly 4,000 residents, has been left in absolute shock. Neighbors recalled the terrifying moments on Wednesday night when police ordered local residents to lock their doors and remain inside.

"We shut the doors and kept our fingers crossed," said neighbor Walter Dare. "Finding out the details the next day was just terrible. Our thoughts are with that little girl."

Murweh Shire Mayor Shaun Radnedge expressed the profound impact the incident has had on the tight-knit region. "It's one of those things that do not happen in these regional areas very often and when it does, it definitely sends ripples right through the whole of the community. It rattles you to the core," Mayor Radnedge said.

However, the Mayor expressed confidence in the town's resilience, stating that the community would band together to support one another and the surviving child through the difficult days ahead.
