A 60-year-old man has been left with head injuries after being hit with an angle grinder during an attempted e-bike theft at a caravan park in Adelaide's inner-east.

Stephen Hoy, a Queensland man, had been staying at the caravan park in Hackney after travelling to Adelaide to watch his son's band perform on Friday night.

Mr Hoy said he initially heard voices outside his caravan about 1:30am on Friday morning and was woken up hours later about 4:30am to the sound of machinery.

He stepped outside and saw a man allegedly trying to steal his e-bike which was locked to his motorhome.

“They had the grinder and they were just grinding through the lock on my bike, it happened in seconds,” Mr Hoy said.

“I jumped out of bed and ran around the front way and he went around the back and then we ... had a fight.”

“He had the grinder going and he swung it and hit me in the head with the grinder while it was going.

“That was the scary bit, I ended up on the ground, I didn’t want him to pinch my bike.”

“Blood was everywhere at that point ... it was just over me, everywhere.”

Mr Hoy said he chased the offender to the curb where there was a second fight between the pair and the man ran away, dropping a number of his belongings.

Paramedics treated Mr Hoy at the scene and he later received stitches.

Police found the e-bike nearby and the angle grinder was left at the scene, but the man is yet to be arrested.

The offender has been described as Caucasian and about 191cm tall.

Despite the incident, Mr Hoy said he was feeling “lucky” his injuries were not more severe.

“I’m feeling pretty good ... could have been anything when you’ve got a grinder that’s going and a guy swings it at you and hits you in the head,” he said.

Anyone with information or CCTV of the attempted robbery is urged to contact police.
