Queensland Woman Dies in Tragic Fall at Popular Bali Beach
A 29-year-old Queensland woman, identified as Brianna Cronin, has died after falling from a cliff at a popular tourist beach on Nusa Penida island, east of Bali. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with Queensland Premier David Crisafulli expressing his condolences to the family.
A 29-year-old Queensland woman has died after falling from a cliff at a popular tourist beach on Nusa Penida island, east of Bali. The identity of the woman, Brianna Cronin, was confirmed on Sunday.
Police and emergency services first reported Ms Cronin was found stranded on the southern side of Kelingking Beach cliff on Saturday morning, local time. Emergency services were sent to the scene; however, the woman fell from the steep cliff before they could reach her, the reports say. Rescue personnel and police retrieved the woman's body from the shoreline.
"According to information from the field, the victim is estimated to have fallen around 9am," Nusa Penida Alert Unit coordinator Cakra Negara said in a statement. "At that time, the victim was looking for an independent route to the edge of the cliff before slipping and falling into the ravine."
Klungkung Police official Iptu I Dewa Nyoman Alit Purnawibawa said Ms Cronin's body was found on the beach. Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida is one of the most popular destinations for Bali tourists.
Mr Negara said an evacuation by sea was cancelled due to high tides and instead Ms Cronin's body was carried up the steep and narrow stairs to the Kelingking Beach viewing area, in an hour-and-a-half-long operation. A medical examination afterwards at Griya Medica Clinic on Nusa Penida island found she had suffered several fractures and other injuries.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance Ms Cronin's family. "We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time. Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment," a spokesperson said. "The family have requested privacy at this difficult time."
"A young woman on the trip of a lifetime, active, enjoying herself, and to have her life taken away in a heartbeat like that, it's just incredibly, incredibly sad," Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said. "I think all of Queensland collectively looks at that and just feels it, wakes up to just a huge degree of sorrow."
