Triple murderer Darryl Young appeals against conviction and sentence
Darryl Valroy Young, a Queensland grazier and coal miner, has lodged an appeal against his conviction and sentence for the triple murder of his neighbours at Bogie. Young was handed three life sentences with a 40-year non-parole period last week.
Triple murderer Darryl Valroy Young has lodged an appeal against his conviction and sentence. The Queensland grazier and coal miner was convicted by a jury last week, which found him guilty of three counts of murder and an attempted murder at Bogie.
The rural area near Bowen falls within the north Queensland Whitsunday region. A four-week Supreme Court trial in Townsville heard that Young shot four neighbours, killing three, at the gate of his cattle station in 2022.
Mervyn Schwarz, 71, Maree Schwarz, 59, and her son Graham Tighe, 35, were killed in the shooting. Graham Tighe's brother Ross Tighe, 36, escaped the scene with a bullet wound.
On Monday, Young, 63, received three life sentences for the murders, with a 40-year non-parole period. Justice Christopher Johnstone's sentence is believed to be the longest ever handed down in Queensland.
A Queensland Courts spokesperson said Young lodged an appeal against his conviction and sentence this morning in the Court of Appeal. An appeal date is yet to be set.
