Groundbreaking news for local healthcare has arrived as the long-awaited redevelopment of the Mackay Base Hospital takes a significant step forward. The state government has officially released its revised master plan for the facility, scheduling construction to begin in 2027.

The updated blueprint secures the 128 new beds first promised in 2022. While the revision introduces no additional beds beyond that initial figure, Stage 1 of the massive project—slated for completion by 2030—will feature a brand-new clinical services building, a dedicated stand-alone birth centre, a rooftop helipad, and crucial expansions to key support services including the kitchen, mortuary, and biomedical technology departments.

Budget Adjustments and Environmental Pauses

Originally estimated at $250 million under the previous administration, an independent review commissioned last year revealed the true cost of the build is likely to hover around $520 million. The project had faced recent delays and was temporarily paused late last year following early site works, which required the safe removal of a substantial amount of buried asbestos.

Premier David Crisafulli defended the timeline of the revised master plan, describing it as a vital "long-term blueprint" for the region. "We've taken the time to listen," Premier Crisafulli said, promising full financial transparency once construction contracts are officially awarded.

State Health Minister Tim Nicholls expressed confidence that the regional workforce could support the project, brushing off concerns regarding local housing shortages for construction workers. "The people who build stadiums are a different construction skill set to the people who build hospitals," Minister Nicholls noted.

Surging Demand and Frontline Realities

The expansion comes at a critical time for the facility. Mackay Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Sean Birgan highlighted the urgent need for emergency department upgrades, noting an 11 per cent surge in critically ill or injured patients presenting to the emergency department over the past year. "There is a significant amount of demand in the system," Mr Birgan acknowledged.

However, the announcement was met with mixed feelings from the community. During the official press event, local resident Toni Harper, who has been in and out of the hospital for treatment, confronted officials about the daily strain placed on healthcare workers.

"They are giving care from the heart, but you can see the anguish in their face when they just don't have time to do something," Ms Harper said, urging the government to listen closely to frontline workers. "All I want you guys to do... is cut the political crap."

Parking Relieved, but Concerns Remain

Parking has also been a major point of contention for visitors. Mackay resident Shane Demaid shared his frustrating experience dealing with the hospital's notorious parking shortage, recounting having to drop off his wife while she was suffering from seizures because no close parking was available. Under the new plan, a massive parking upgrade is promised, introducing separate multi-deck staff and public car parks with over 1,000 new spaces.

While the parking boost is welcome, Mr Demaid expressed skepticism about the project's timeline, calling the 2027 start date "too little, too late" for families currently struggling to access care.
