De Minaur Leads Australia to Perfect Start in Davis Cup Tie Against Poland

Alex de Minaur has given Australia a perfect start in its Davis Cup tie against Poland, defeating Maks Kasnikowski 6-3, 6-0 in the first singles rubber. The win comes as a boost for de Minaur, who has had a challenging year by his standards.

A Dominant Performance

De Minaur's 231st-ranked opponent put up a fight in the opening set, but the Australian's performance quickly turned dominant. He took just 20 minutes to win the second set, securing the win in 35 minutes.

Throughout the match, de Minaur fired up the packed Pat Rafter Arena crowd, taking time out of his celebrations to engage with the audience.

"We play outside Australia for 10 months of the year, so we don't really get too many chances to play back here in front of a packed crowd," he said.

"It was a great atmosphere and one that I've missed."

A Year of Challenges

De Minaur's win comes after a tough year, which has seen him drop to 13th in the race for the year-end ATP finals. He has faced early exits in major tournaments, including a loss to 70th-ranked Botic van de Zandschulp at the US Open.

However, de Minaur remains optimistic, hoping that this period will "springboard me back to where I wanna be".

"I know the tennis is there, it hasn't gone anywhere. I've just gotta step up and keep doing what I'm doing," he said.

"It's a different environment and I think I thrive in these types on environments, team competitions. It's a little bit different to your day to day on tour."

"The pressure is different. I'd say it's probably more in team events because you're not just playing for yourself, you're playing for the boys around you and I think that brings out the best in me."

Decisive Sunday

James Duckworth was unable to emulate de Minaur's performance, losing 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Kamil Majchrzak in the second singles rubber. The tie is now level, setting up a decisive Sunday in Brisbane.

Rinky Hijikata and Max Purcell will take on Karol Drzewiecki and Jan Zielinski in the doubles to kick off the second day, before the reverse singles.
