A wet, freezing afternoon at Canberra’s Manuka Oval has turned into a physical war of attrition, with the GWS Giants losing key defender Jayden Laverde to a serious rib injury during their Round 22 clash against the Gold Coast Suns.

In biting six-degree temperatures and driving rain, the Giants' backline suffered a massive blow early in the second quarter. Laverde, who had been tasked with a crucial matchup on Jed Walter, copped a heavy knock to his ribs while contesting a ground ball on the wing. Despite several courageous attempts to play through the pain, the defender was seen struggling to breathe and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the match.

Backline Adjustments for Both Sides

Laverde's exit compounded defensive headaches for both coaches in the hostile conditions. Prior to the bounce, the Gold Coast Suns were forced into a late change of their own, with veteran defender Sam Collins ruled out.
