Mat Ryan's Socceroos career not over yet: Popovic
Mat Ryan's Socceroos career may not be over yet, according to coach Tony Popovic, despite his surprise omission from the squad for upcoming friendlies against Brazil. Ryan, a 105-time capped player, has been left out in favour of younger goalkeepers.
Socceroos coach Tony Popovic has insisted that Mat Ryan's international career is far from over, despite the veteran goalkeeper being omitted from his squad for upcoming friendlies against Brazil.
Ryan, a 105-time capped Socceroos player, was surprisingly left out of the squad for games in Brisbane and Townsville, with uncapped St Mirren goalkeeper Jacob Chapman earning a call-up in his place.
Ryan's omission a surprise
Ryan, 34, has been a distinguished player for the Socceroos, but lost his starting spot to young goalkeeper Patrick Beach at the World Cup. He was substituted on during the round-of-32 penalty shootout against Egypt, with Popovic later clarifying that Ryan had been aware he might replace Beach as extra time kicked off.
