Cairns Community Rallies Behind Family of Young Woman Killed in Tragic Smithfield Bypass Crash
The family of 25-year-old Savannah Spence Paige has expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of local support following her tragic death in a multi-vehicle crash on the Smithfield Bypass. A candlelight vigil has been organized in Cairns as the community rallies to support her husband and loved ones.
The Far North Queensland community has wrapped its arms around the grieving family of Savannah Spence Paige, a 25-year-old Kewarra Beach resident who tragically lost her life in a multi-vehicle collision on the Smithfield Bypass this week.
In a poignant statement, Ms. Spence Paige’s family expressed their profound grief, describing her as a vibrant soul who brought immense joy to everyone she met. "Savannah was beautiful inside and out, with a smile that lit up every room," the family shared. "She had an incredible sense of humour, a kind and caring heart, and was loved by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her."
A Life Cut Short
Ms. Spence Paige and her husband, Lachie Paige, had recently relocated to Cairns from the Gold Coast earlier this year to begin an exciting new chapter of their lives together. The couple, who had been together since 2017 and were approaching their second wedding anniversary, had recently built a new home and were actively building a future in the local area.
"To have that future taken away so suddenly is something our family is struggling to comprehend," the statement read, highlighting the devastating impact of the sudden loss.
Outpouring of Community Support
In the wake of the tragedy, a wave of support has emerged from both the Cairns and Gold Coast communities. An online fundraising campaign has been launched to assist Mr. Paige, a self-employed carpenter, as he navigates the unimaginable road ahead without his partner.
To honor her memory, locals have organized a candlelight vigil scheduled for Sunday evening in Cairns. A growing floral tribute has also accumulated near the site of the crash, offering a quiet space for friends and community members to pay their respects.
The family extended their heartfelt thanks to the Queensland Police Service, first responders, and emergency personnel for their professionalism and empathy. "Every message, phone call, gesture of compassion has reminded us that we are not facing this heartbreak alone," they said.
Legal Proceedings Underway
The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday when a stolen utility vehicle allegedly struck two cars, including the SUV driven by Ms. Spence Paige. The driver of the utility vehicle, 36-year-old Jake Edward Warn, has been arrested and charged with several serious offenses, including manslaughter.
Police allege that Mr. Warn was operating the stolen vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicating substance at the time of the collision. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on October 27.
