Lawrence Springborg Firmly Rejects Queensland Governor Role Amid Succession Whispers

Goondiwindi Mayor Lawrence Springborg has emphatically denied any involvement in discussions regarding his potential appointment as Queensland's next governor, asserting he has neither sought, been offered, nor expects to assume the vice-regal position.

Speaking to our news desk, the former long-serving Queensland Nationals leader and ex-LNP president addressed swirling media reports that had positioned him as a frontrunner to succeed current Governor Jeannette Young, whose term is slated to conclude later this year.

"I have one position in public office and that's the mayor of the Goondiwindi Regional Council," Mr Springborg stated. "We're basically two years into a four-year term and that's where my focus is."

He continued, expressing surprise at the origins of the speculation: "So, I'm not sure where it's all come from, beyond speculation — but certainly, I have heard nothing official about it."

Mr Springborg further elaborated that he would be "extraordinarily surprised" if such an appointment were to materialize, underscoring the lack of formal communication. "Certainly, the people who you would normally expect to talk to you about these positions and offer them certainly haven't talked to me," he explained. "I'm not seeking it, I haven't asked for it, and I certainly haven't been offered it, and nor do I expect to be."

Echoing this sentiment, Premier David Crisafulli confirmed earlier this week during an our network Radio Brisbane interview that Mr Springborg would not be the next governor. Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie, a staunch supporter of the monarchy, maintained discretion when pressed on potential appointees last week.

"We are going through a process — a process of which governors have been appointed since the dawn of time in Queensland. Good try," Mr Bleijie remarked. "Her [Jeannette Young's] term as governor has an expiry date on it … and the government are considering options, and we are looking at the process."

The role of governor involves representing King Charles in Queensland. Mr Springborg's illustrious political career spans nearly three decades in state parliament, including ministerial portfolios in the Borbidge and Newman administrations. He spearheaded his political faction through three electoral campaigns in the 2000s and was instrumental in the creation of the Liberal National Party in 2008.

From 2021 until 2025, Mr Springborg also served as president of the LNP, stepping down after the party's electoral triumph the preceding year. Upon his departure from the presidency, Premier Crisafulli lauded him as a "unifying force."

Dr. Jeannette Young, renowned for her leadership as chief health officer during the Covid pandemic, was appointed to the gubernatorial post in 2021 under the Annastacia Palaszczuk government.
