Man dies after being found with 'unexplained' injuries in Surat home

A man in his 80s has died in hospital after being found with life-threatening injuries in his home in Surat, about 450km west of Brisbane.

Police have established two crime scenes and are treating the man's death as suspicious. Investigators are urging anyone with information to contact police.

Police say they are working to piece together the movements of people who were inside a southern Queensland home when an 84-year-old man suffered "unexplained" fatal injuries.

Emergency services were called to a property on Ivan Street in Surat, about 450 kilometres west of Brisbane, at 3:40pm on Thursday with reports that Vivien Dingle had suffered a "medical episode" at the home.

Police said people at the property decided to drive Mr Dingle to the nearby hospital before help arrived. Paramedics intercepted the vehicle and worked to resuscitate him, but he later died in hospital.

Southern Region Assistant Commissioner Matthew Vanderbyl said the house and the car in the town of about 400 people had been declared crime scenes, an autopsy was underway, and no-one had been charged.

"Being unexplained as it is, we've moved to enquiries in this matter quite intensively to try and understand what has happened," he said.

"We're not at that point of knowing with any clarity what that is at this stage."

Assistant Commissioner Vanderbyl said police had questioned everyone in the house and they were all known to Mr Dingle.

"We're trying to piece together all the movements of everybody in and around that household over the preceding time," he said.

He said police had been called to the household before.

"We've certainly had some dealings with members of the family in recent times," he said.

"Whether that's related to the events of yesterday or not is still something we're looking into."

Former Balonne Shire Mayor Donna Smith said she had known Mr Dingle her whole life and his death had cast a "real shadow of sadness over the whole community".

"Vivien was a true gentleman," Ms Smith said.

She said he had worked in the timber industry at the old sawmills in Surat.

"He was a person who was so well known by everyone in the community for so many years," she said.

"Vivien went to school there, as did his family, and he was very much part of the community and a very well-respected person and known to be a very hard worker in his younger days."
