Powderfinger Reunion: Iconic Australian Rock Band Confirms Return
Powderfinger has confirmed their reunion, 16 years after breaking up, with a series of shows across Australia set to begin in September next year. The legendary Australian rock band announced their return via a video posted to their social media accounts this morning.
Legendary Australian rock band Powderfinger has confirmed their highly-anticipated reunion, 16 years after disbanding. In a video posted to their social media accounts this morning, frontman Bernard Fanning announced that the band will embark on a series of shows across Australia from September next year.
"We always said that if we were going to get back together to do some shows, that you guys would be the first to know," Fanning said. "We're going to build something pretty special just for you guys," guitarist Darren Middleton added. "We'll see you from the stage."
The reunion confirmation comes after a series of cryptic teasers appeared around the country over the past week, which fans quickly deciphered as hints at Powderfinger's return. The band's official social media account, recently wiped clean, posted a teaser with the caption: "Add enough time to enough variables and something extraordinary happens…"
A Brief History of Powderfinger
Formed in Brisbane in 1989, Powderfinger gained national acclaim with their second album, 1996's Double Allergic. However, it was their 2000 album Odyssey Number Five that catapulted them to stardom, peaking at the top of the charts and winning six ARIA awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for My Happiness.
Powderfinger has had a decorated history in the triple j Hottest 100, winning the 1999 and 2000 countdowns, making 22 appearances in the annual polls, and picking up three entries in last year's Hottest 100 of Australian Songs.
Tour Details and Previous Reunions
While the band confirmed they will head back on the road from September next year, further details about the tour have not been disclosed. This reunion follows two semi-reunions in previous years, including a 2017 performance at Splendour in the Grass and a virtual show during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns, which raised over $450,000 for Support Act and Beyond Blue.
Powderfinger's reunion announcement comes just a week after fellow Australian rock band Silverchair declined to reform for the NRL grand final, citing rustiness.
Before disbanding in 2010, Powderfinger embarked on a massive farewell tour, selling over 200,000 tickets across 34 shows.
